Safeguarding the Digital World: Cyber Crime Awareness & Prevention at ICNU

The Institute of Commerce, Nirma University (ICNU), hosted an enlightening guest session on Cyber Crime Awareness and Prevention aimed at equipping students with practical knowledge to navigate the growing risks of the digital era.

The session was delivered by IPS Hemant Kalal, a distinguished officer known for his expertise in tackling cyber-related crimes, and was graced by the presence of Dr. Udai Paliwal, Director of ICNU, who welcomed and felicitated the speaker.

Mr. Kalal shed light on the rapidly evolving landscape of cyber threats, underlining how fraudsters exploit technology to deceive unsuspecting individuals. He explained in detail various methods of online fraud such as spoofing applications, fake investment schemes, ransomware attacks, and delivery or customer care scams, illustrating how these tricks often lead to severe financial and personal losses.

To make the discussion more relatable, he presented a case study on remote access fraud, showing how scammers gain access to a victim’s device, steal sensitive data, and manipulate it for malicious purposes. His real-life examples highlighted the pressing need for vigilance in everyday digital interactions.

In his address, IPS Kalal stressed the significance of digital literacy and proactive prevention. He advised participants to adopt simple but powerful safeguards—verifying sources before sharing data, steering clear of untrusted applications, enabling two-factor authentication, and promptly reporting suspicious activities. The session proved to be highly impactful, leaving students more aware of the lurking dangers in cyberspace while also empowering them with the tools to defend themselves. It was not only an academic exercise but also a timely reminder of how crucial cyber safety is in today’s interconnected world.
